Modular Parklets for streets

MODULAR PARKLETS FOR STREETS

There is a global move to reclaim the streets from vehicles back to pedestrians.  A common solution is the conversion of car spaces to public spaces by converting these to outdoor dining areas, public gathering areas for relaxation and green zones.  These areas are commonly referred to as parklets or pop-up parks.  Future Village was one of the first businesses in Australia to specialise in the design, manufacture and delivery of these parklets.  We have developed a large suite of green infrastructure that can be combined in multiple configurations to block one to many car spots.

The main design hurdles for parklets placed in car spaces are;

  • the interaction zone between passing vehicles and public using the parklet
  • storm water flow
  • trip hazards and level surfaces
  • hostile environment for plants
  • maintenance

We continue to place large emphasis on R&D to overcome these hurdles so we can provide different options for our clients to implement.  Our philosophy has been to design free standing green infrastructure based around 1.2m dimensions that enables all our products to be combined to form various configurations.  All elements have levelling capabilities and are manufactured using Australian materials that are hard wearing requiring minimal maintenance. All our planters and plant trays have internal water reservoirs and wicking systems to ensure maximum plant health and reduce water maintenance and usage.  Download - Modular Parklet Brochure

For shade we have a number of options.

  • Pavilion - These are self standing metal and polycarbonate shade structures that use our Large Planters as footings.  They can be joined together or as single units, with single units spanning nearly 8m.

Storm water flow

An often overlooked aspect of street parklets is enabling free flowing of storm water along the gutters as well as access to the system in clean out or prevent of blockages.. We have designed our modular decking trays with stainless steel hinge system to access the gutters as well as levelling feet to ensure a level entrance from the gutter to the parklet.

Barrier protection

Each parklet location will require different levels of protection from traffic.  This is dependable on individual council guidelines, council traffic management, speed of road, proximity to corners, pedestrian crossings etc.   We have a number of different products to meet all expected barrier requirements.  To see the full range visit our barrier and fencing page.
