OUTDOOR LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

Stimulating student learning and wellbeing

Future Village is now partnering with WaterUps  to deliver outdoor learning environments that go beyond traditional play spaces—creating flexible, nature-rich settings that actively support student learning, wellbeing and engagement. Schools are increasingly challenged by limited space, ageing infrastructure and rising expectations around behaviour, inclusion and student outcomes. Our approach responds by transforming under utilised, hard-surfaced areas into adaptable environments that function as true extensions of the classroom.

Flexible, nature-rich spaces that support learning, wellbeing and school culture

Schools today are under increasing pressure to create environments that support student wellbeing, engagement and behaviour while working within limited space, aging infrastructure and tight budgets. We partner with schools to transform hot, hard and under-utilised outdoor areas into flexible, nature-rich environments that support both learning, well-being and engagement - with minimal disruption or cost of major construction.

Why outdoor spaces matter

The Challenge Facing Schools

Across both primary and secondary campuses, outdoor areas are often:

  • Dominated by hard surfaces or ageing turf
    Too hot, exposed or under-utilised

  • Designed for movement or play, not learning or engagement

  • Difficult to adapt as enrolments and teaching needs evolve.

With green outdoor spaces, schools are responding to increasing expectations around student wellbeing, behaviour, inclusion and engagement.

Why Nature- Based Outdoor Environments Work

Access to well-designed outdoor spaces make a significant difference:

  • Improved focus, engagement and emotional regulation

  • Opportunities for movement, collaboration and active learning

  • Stronger social connection and positive behaviour
  • A deeper connection to environment and sustainability.

Outdoor environments help students to move between active and calm states — supporting learning readiness throughout the school day.

Why Traditional Approaches Fall Short

Conventional outdoor builds are often fixed, slow to deliver and costly. They can:

  • Lock schools into inflexible layouts

  • Require long construction timeframes

  • Create high capital and maintenance costs

  • Struggle to adapt to changing curriculum and student needs.

Schools need flexible outdoor spaces that can evolve; not static infrastructure.

Modular, Low-Disruption Delivery

Spaces can be reconfigured, expanded or relocated as needs change.

Our system is purpose-built for schools:

  • Installed in days, not weeks

  • No major civil works required

  • Minimal disruption to operations and timetables

  • Suitable for staged roll out across campus
