In 2024, City of Parramatta Council engaged Future Village to deliver a large-scale planter greening program across Parramatta Square and Centenary Square, addressing both public realm improvement and long-term asset management challenges.
Council identified a key issue with traditional planter procurement — high end-of-life disposal costs and limited storage capacity. In response, Future Village developed a bespoke Planter Plan, transitioning the project from a capital purchase model to an operational rental model. Under this approach, Council rents the planters and floating gardens, while Future Village manages all planting, maintenance, upgrades and lifecycle replacement.
The model provides Council with maximum flexibility: planters can be relocated, upgraded or removed at any time without additional capital cost. The program has since steadily expanded and continues to be maintained by Future Village’s dedicated operations team.
Hargreaves Mall is the central pedestrian spine of Bendigo’s CBD—frequently activated for community events but highly exposed to summer heat. When council called for large, organically shaped seating infrastructure, we were awarded the tender and immediately engaged with their additional requirement: the furniture had to be modular and relocatable to accommodate a winter ice rink installation.
This added engineering complexity, but also presented an opportunity. We integrated large-scale planters and Urban Canopees into the design to provide year-round shade and visual softening. To support flexible public use, we also expanded our Wave Furniture range to include additional seating elements tailored to the mall’s layout.
The result is a bespoke built, dynamic, climate-responsive installation that adapts to seasonal programming while enhancing comfort and amenity in the heart of the city.
Transport NSW has four of our Mobile Parklets. We upgraded these original parklets, replacing the facading with composite aluminium board that was more durable and easier to apply new vinyl skins when required.
In the heart of The Entrance on the Central Coast, the town plaza had gradually lost its character. Over time, the original furniture was removed, leaving only a fountain and a handful of umbrellas.
To re-energise the space and welcome the community back, we reinterpreted the existing paver pattern into a new design of modular raised seating. The scheme includes a small floating garden that leads into two large planters with integrated seating and single canopies—bringing shade, greenery, and life back to the plaza.
Penrith Beach is a seasonal beach run by the NSW DPIE. The beach hosted over 210000 people. The main issue since opening in 2023 was the lack of shade and seating.
We were commissioned to provide two zones of freestanding shade and seating that the public could utilise. The structures have to be removed each year and stored before returning for the next season.
We used our decking, sun beds, pavilions and seating. We also treated the composite timber with a white finish to lower heat absorption.
Design, manufacture and installation of a outdoor modular dining parklet for the hotel. Mix of plantabarrier, tree planter, solar lighting and fencing surrounding our modular decking trays. Vinyl signage on exterior for branding.
This absorbed 2 car spaces but gave the hotel an extra patronage space for 30 guests.
Burwood Road, the vibrant heart of Burwood, recently transformed as part of Burwood Council's Culture Streets initiative. For two weeks, six parking spaces were reimagined as a dynamic outdoor parklet, enhancing the area's lively atmosphere.
The parklet featured modular and raised decking, stylish benches, and an abundance of planters, bringing a refreshing touch of greenery. This thoughtfully designed space came to life both day and night, creating an inviting, communal spot for all to enjoy.
Langtree Mall, located in the heart of Mildura, is a central hub much like many town plazas across Australia—lacking in greenery. Recognising the importance of reintroducing nature into the urban core, the Mildura Rural City Council and Mildura City Heart sought a solution that would bring lush greenery to the area while remaining within budget.
Our innovative Turf Trays provided the perfect solution, allowing the city to install a large-scale lawn directly over the existing pavers. The design cleverly integrates with the mall’s unique “crazy paving,” which represents the Murray River. We engineered modular paving that seamlessly passes through the lawn, maintaining this iconic river system's continuity.
One of the standout features of the lawn is its internal irrigation system, housed within the tray reservoirs, which efficiently wicks water upwards to keep the grass lush. Another key advantage is the minimal disruption to the underlying surface—no excavation is needed. Should maintenance be required, the modular trays can be easily separated using a pallet jack.
Thanks to research in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney, we anticipate that on days exceeding 36°C, the lawn will be 12-14°C cooler, making the space significantly more comfortable for visitors.
Future Village recently installed an innovative, freestanding green arbour for Ipswich City Council—marking a world first in its design. The arbour is fully adjustable in length, allowing it to seamlessly navigate around existing services and signage, offering a flexible and practical solution for urban spaces.
The primary purpose of this arbour is to mitigate the urban heat island effect by providing much-needed shade, encouraging pedestrian traffic, particularly toward the nearby hospital.
The system utilises our wicking raised planters, which serve both as structural supports and as a growth medium for the plants that will eventually cover the arbour. In the interim, shade cloth has been installed along the center to offer immediate relief while the plants mature. Additionally, solar-powered festoon lighting has been incorporated to enhance safety and visibility at night.
